UK minister speaks with Ranil on protests and media freedom

British Minister Lord (Tariq) Ahmad phoned President Ranil Wickremesinghe and discussed the crisis in Sri Lanka, including the right to demonstrate peacefully and media freedom.
The Commonwealth Foreign and Development Minister of State said he had acconstructive conversation with President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
He said they had discussed the concerning the security and economic situation in Sri Lanka and aShe also focused on the rights to peaceful protest, media freedom, human rights and justice.
The minister also said that the UK will continue to support Sri Lanka through these challenges.
The conversation came after the military launched a pre-dawn raid on the Galle Face protest site on Friday, just minutes after protesters announced they would withdraw from the presidential secretariat.
Hundreds of soldiers surrounded Galle Face around 1 a.m. (Friday) and stormed the presidential secretariat and expelled the protesters.
The police and army also destroyed tents and other structures erected around the presidential secretariat. (Colombo Official Gazette)
