2022 Ironman 70.3 World Championship Press Conference: Women’s Race
Paula Findlay
“In 2018. I won one of my first 70.3s here [in St. George]. The field is very different. I feel like a very different athlete now, but it’s always a great feeling to come back here. I’ve been here four or five times since then, so I know the course really well and I really, really like that familiarity and I like it here. I think most women in the race have already done that. It’s kind of a course advantage, but it’s fun to come back to a course that I know very well.
Flora Duffy
“So much has happened since January 2020 [South Africa 70.3]. It’s actually the only 70.3 I’ve done. I tried to do others, and I think everyone knows those stories behind the races… I don’t know how I managed to catch up with Emma in South Africa – I think we have both finished this race and we’re like, What happened? But I won, and if I can run like that on Friday, I’ll be very happy.

“I always aim to build towards the 70.3 world championship during the year, I always want to put in my best performance for this time of the year. And this year it’s a bit later than usual, but I think it took me a little while… so I’m pretty glad it’s a little later.

Emma Pallant Browne
“I had good leads and good races, but we always felt like I peaked mid-season, so I tried something different and took two months off racing. Now I’m going back to this race and I hope I can put in a good performance.
Taylor Knibb
“Last year’s race with Lucy [Charles-Barclay] was a whole different race. Everything can happen. There are a lot of strong new women in the field who may not have been around last year. I am grateful to race in the United States. I think it’s more beneficial to have some familiarity, especially going to the grocery store. That’s what helps me, at least.

“It was a very different year. It will only be my fourth race of the year. Normally I would have run a lot more at this point, so I feel fresher than I normally would. We always knew I was going to race here after Kona. I just needed to finish Kona and put that behind me and then fully focus on this race. I feel like we did that really well mentally, and my body seems to have followed suit and it’s pretty cool.

“It’s a very tough bike course, especially in the second half. You have that point where everyone is tired and you can be very anxious to start cycling. I think the price is playing to my advantage. I think I can tell the difference. »
Kristian Blummenfelt
“I’ve been here a bunch now with the third world championship race here, I’ve been quite a bit on the course… I think three weeks between full distance and half distance should be doable. I’m getting ready again and I feel good. I’m excited for another race.
Eric Lagerstrom
“I’m really excited about the race. For Santa Cruz, I got in my van, slept and ran, and won. It felt like this really big epic adventure, and that excites me. Just like this race. For example, coming here and having this result… having a big result here is a really good seal of legitimacy. It’s gonna be amazing. Everyone here is so amazing.

“I definitely had my breakthrough race here last year, and being back here is so amazing. I have so many amazing memories from last year. I love the course, I love the city, I love the support. I feel it when I walk around town.

Sam Long
“I didn’t do Kona because it’s not a panacea. I watched the whole season and picked a lot of games throughout the season, and Kona wasn’t my calling this year. “It’s important. Every time you start a race, it’s important, and any world championship is super important.

“With my two titles in 70.3, it’s been a good career so far. And then adding Kona, you feel satisfied but also empty in a way, after such a big win. It’s not so not that I’m approaching this race like I’ve done before because my career really depends on winning and in previous years I felt like I had to prove my career and my sponsors and everything, but for the I’ve done so well in Kona right now, I think it’s hard to go into this race hungry, but I’ll do my best to perform.
